The Studierendenwerk Mainz offers two full-day daycare centers, Kitas Campulino and Sprösslinge, for children of students at JGU, Mainz University of Applied Sciences, as well as children of employees of MPI, IMB, and the Student Services Mainz.
The full-day daycare center Kita Campulino can accommodate 82 children from a few months old, while the Montessori Daycare Center Sprösslinge can care for 100 children from twelve months old. Opening hours: Mon-Thurs 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Fri 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM
Registration for the nursery and daycare is done through the Studierendenwerk Mainz. You can submit the application by email. In addition to the application form, the Studierendenwerk also requires your current enrollment certificate and proof of your previous course of study (for university students) or the employer certificate filled out by your HR department (for employees of MPI, IMB, Studierendenwerk). For Kita Sprösslinge, in order for your registration to be considered, you must have attended one of the parent information events before the allocation of places. You can find the dates on the daycare center’s homepage.
The places are allocated centrally by an allocation committee responsible for the Studierendenwerk daycare centers. Families must have their primary residence registered in Mainz; children from surrounding communities or from Hesse can unfortunately no longer be accepted.

Childcare in Transitional Periods
In childcare in transitional periods, children from the age of eight weeks to 12 years are cared for by educational professionals in the back-up facility 3 K – Kinder, Kunst, Kultur of pme familienservice GmbH. Childcare in transitional periods is intended to enable you to return to the university after your parental leave as a supplementary care option if you have not yet found long-term regular childcare (daycare center, childminder, BHE). At the same time, the service also offers all international guests of JGU the opportunity to obtain a childcare place, even if they are visiting JGU for only one or two semesters and therefore usually do not receive a place in a municipal facility or with a childminder.
If you receive a place confirmation for your child, you will be granted the use of childcare in transitional periods for six months. During this time, you can use the care up to three days per week all day and with full board. You arrange the care days individually with the facility, whereby you must always commit to at least four weeks. As with daycare centers and childminders, there is an adjustment period at the beginning of the contract period.
JGU students pay a contribution of 20€ per care day.
How can I register my child?
Application Deadlines for Childcare in Transitional Periods 2024/25
Due to increased demand, if you wish to start the settling-in period at the beginning of the semester in April and October, you must submit your application two months in advance. Please note that it may not be possible to start the settling-in process right at the beginning of the month.

Childcare in Emergency and Exceptional Circumstances
There are situations where, despite the best organization of childcare, care shortages occur and parents need reliable short-notice care for their child or children. In these cases, since 2009, JGU has enabled you to use the back-up facilities of pme familienservice GmbH.
In emergency care, children aged 8 weeks up to and including 12 years can be cared for at short notice on an hourly or daily basis, even in the evenings and on weekends. As a member of JGU, you can use emergency care free of charge for 3 days per year per child. Therefore, this offer cannot be used to bridge holiday periods of other care facilities.
If you want to use emergency care, you must register this at the latest on the evening before via pme’s free hotline. The hotline is available daily, including weekends:
Hotline 0800 – 80 100 70 80
The emergency care takes place in pme’s back-up facilities. You are not bound to the Mainz location, but can bring your child for emergency care to any pme back-up facility and thus choose the facility that is best located for you. For the Campus Mainz, the nearest back-up facilities are in Mainz and Frankfurt, for the Campus Germersheim in Mannheim and Karlsruhe. On pme’s website, you can find an overview of all back-up facilities.
If you are interested in using emergency care, we recommend that you and your child take a non-binding look at the facility on the regularly held open days. However, you can also use emergency care without having seen the facility beforehand.
The emergency care in Mainz takes place in the back-up facility “3 K – Kinder, Kunst, Kultur”. This is located near the main train station and Münsterplatz in the parish house of the Altmünster community:
3K – Kinder, Kunst, Kultur
Münsterstraße 25

Childcare in Mainz
From their first birthday, children in Rhineland-Palatinate are legally entitled to a place in a daycare center or child day care. Parents must pay an income-based parental contribution for the childcare place. From their second birthday, children are entitled to free childcare.
Daycare Centers
The municipal services currently include the following forms of care:
The application for a facility operated by the City of Mainz is centrally managed through the Office for Youth and Family, Department of Daycare Centers. Registrations are only possible after birth, not during pregnancy. Places are allocated based on a point system. On the Office for Youth and Family’s website, you can find a list of all municipal daycare centers.
In addition to municipally operated daycare centers, there are also daycare centers run by religious or independent organizations. The registration and allocation process in these daycare centers is individually regulated, so you need to inquire directly with the facilities.
You can search for and find additional daycare centers in Rhineland-Palatinate through the Daycare Server Rhineland-Palatinate.
Family Day Care
Child day care can take place either in the household of the child day care provider (day mother/father) or the children are cared for by caregivers in the parents’ household (BHE). This form of care is very individual and flexible, as care times can be arranged with the caregiver. Day care providers are self-employed, so you only pay for the care costs of the day care person; payment for absences and holidays is arranged with the day care person. Parents who have their children cared for in day care can apply for a subsidy from the city to have the costs for day care subsidized up to 6.00€/hour. BHEs, on the other hand, are employed subject to social insurance contributions. Here, the parents are the employers and must continue to pay wages even during BHE’s absence periods. On the Mini-Job Center’s website, you can find information about private households as employers. You may also be able to get subsidies from the city for BHE costs, but only if the BHE is qualified.
On the City of Mainz website, you will find information on regulations, costs, and placement through the Office for Youth and Family. The project “ChiK – Equal Opportunities in Child Day Care” is a city-offered program where places with day care providers are subsidized by the city, making them accessible to families from all income groups.
In addition to placement through the Office for Youth and Family, parents can also search for day care/BHE on the official Childcare Exchange of the City of Mainz.

Parents must pay a fee for the childcare place, which is calculated based on their income, household size, and the extent of care. From their second birthday, children are entitled to free childcare.
Daycare Centers

You can search for and find additional daycare centers in Rhineland-Palatinate through the Rhineland-Palatinate Daycare Server.
Family Day Care

Parents who have their children cared for in family day care can apply for cost coverage from the Germersheim District Youth Welfare Office under certain conditions.
On the website of the Germersheim district, you can find more information about the process, placement, etc. In the information folder “Informationen für Eltern von Tagespflegekindern”, parents can get additional information, e.g., about the amount of monthly parental contributions.

Schools
Elementary Schools
If your child turns six years old by August 31 of a given year, they are required to attend school in Rhineland-Palatinate, meaning they will be enrolled in an elementary school that same year.
Which public elementary school your child will attend depends on the school district where they are registered. You can find the school districts in Mainz and an overview of schools in Germersheim on the respective city websites. For parents who already live and are registered in the city with their children, the elementary schools will contact them in due time (about a year in advance) to request enrollment of their children. If you are moving to Mainz or Germersheim, you should contact the elementary school in your residential area as soon as possible.
If you want to enroll your child in a private elementary school, you need to contact the school directly for registration. You can find the registration deadlines on the schools’ websites. The city of Mainz provides a list of all private elementary schools.
Special Education Schools
Both in Mainz and Germersheim, there are various special education schools with different focus areas (language, learning, or holistic development). To attend a special education school, a special education assessment is required. In most cases, parents must first register their children at the local elementary school. The parents or the school can then apply for an assessment of special educational needs. It’s best to contact the special education schools directly for information about admission requirements.
Secondary Schools
At the end of elementary school, parents receive a recommendation from teachers with the mid-year report cards in 4th grade, indicating which type of secondary school would be most suitable for their child. To learn about the schools in question, secondary schools offer information events for parents. The dates are announced through the elementary schools (and in local media). The registration period for public secondary schools runs from February 15 to the end of the month (February 28 or 29) of the year your child transitions to secondary school. On the City of Mainz website, you can find a list of all public Gymnasiums and schools for gifted students, Realschulen plus, and comprehensive schools. On the Germersheim district website, you can find an overview of all secondary schools. Registration and allocation of places in private secondary schools often occurs before the registration period for public schools, so if needed, inform yourself in good time on the respective school websites.
