With the series “THE LECTURE DAY. University Professors Read for Kindergarten Kids” The JGU´s Family Services Center has been participating in the nationwide Reading Day since 2024. Professors from various institutes and the faculty of the university read to the children of the three campus daycare centers, as well as the children of students and university employees, in one of the lecture halls. With this “lecture,” we want to support both the cause of the bundesweiten Vorlesetags (nationwide Reading Day) and reading itself, and take the opportunity to make our “campus children” visible and welcome them to the campus.
The nationwide Reading Day 2025 will take place on November 21, 2025 under the motto “Reading speaks your language!”. We cordially invite all children of JGU employees and students to our reading:

Eric Carle: “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”
Our Book

Eric Carle: The Very Hungry Caterpillar (Gerstenberg-Verlag)
Even small caterpillars can be very hungry. That’s why the Very Hungry Caterpillar sets out to find something to eat – and succeeds. From Monday to Sunday, it eats its way page by page through a mountain of treats until it is finally full. Now is the time to build a cocoon, and after two weeks of waiting, a beautiful butterfly hatches from it.

The children of the daycare centers Campulino, Sprösslinge and the Städtischen Kita Unigelände as well as all children of students and employees of the JGU from 5 years are cordially invited. We ask for registration by November 16, 2025.
The nationwide Reading Day takes place every year on the third Friday in November as a joint initiative of the Stiftung Lesen, DIE ZEIT, and the Deutsche Bahn Stiftung Deutschland. The Reading Day aims to bring reading as an important foundation for education and future opportunities for children into the center of public attention. In “Mainz, the Most Publicly Effective Reading Capital”, numerous readings for children (and adults) also take place annually.
