As part of the Spring and Autumn University of the Career Services, students can prepare themselves for job applications, gain insights into the daily work routines of various professional fields through practical workshops, and acquire key qualifications. In the past, the Family Services Center has also organized practical workshops for students with family responsibilities within this framework.

Event
Children, Studies Digital Stress
Speaker
Katja Michalek
Event Description
Students with families are in a constant process of organization. Successful time management is crucial, especially when children are still of care-dependent age or when caring for relatives at home. However, even the best time planning is often thwarted by unforeseen events and frequently leads to conflicts between private and academic obligations. Thus, studies and family can quickly become an almost unmanageable double burden.
The event illustrates how personal performance can be positively influenced using effective and individual coping strategies without any additional pressure. Furthermore, the online seminar focuses on working from home, between children and computers. The method of mental training, an effective and sustainable program for stabilizing and developing one’s own resources, provides the impulse for this.

Studying with Children?
I Can Manage Both!
Speaker
Claudia Winter
Event Description
The daily life of students with children is often a struggle for the “right”, efficient use of increasingly scarce time; no area can be neglected without consequences: study performances must be delivered on schedule, childcare must be ensured at all times, and higher expenses require greater income. Additionally, those affected often find themselves unprepared and unexpectedly confronted with traditional gender arrangements in their new roles as mothers and fathers.
What assistance do the university and the Studierendenwerk Mainz offer student parents to help them succeed in this balancing act? What skills and competencies help to master the challenge of studying with children, and what attitude is beneficial? Being able to plan and organize well while remaining flexible, making binding agreements, combining perseverance with composure, distinguishing important from unimportant, and last but not least, maintaining humor and curiosity. After successfully completing their studies, student parents can present all these as proven competencies during job interviews.
The workshop focuses on what is already working well and what can potentially be optimized to ensure the success of the life plan of studying with children.

Family, University, and Time for Myself – How I Shape My Studies with Child(ren)
Speaker
Nils Seiler
Event Description
Studying with a child is challenging. When changing diapers and visiting playgrounds are on the agenda alongside lectures and exams, many parents find it difficult to strike a balance between their academic and family lives. One or the other often falls short. Good self-management and mindful handling of one’s own wishes and resources can support this and reduce stress.
The workshop provides students with children helpful exercises on relaxation, stress and time management.
